Education, Career, Wealth… What Makes a Man Most Desirable in His 60s?

A few months ago, I met with a man in his 60s for a matchmaking consultation.

He had lost his wife five years earlier. After recently watching his youngest son get married, he came to see me and said, “Now I’d like to find some happiness for myself.”

Mr. A had graduated from a prestigious university’s engineering school and retired as a senior manager at a major electronics company.

He owned his home, but most of his retirement savings had gone toward his two sons’ overseas education and weddings.

He took great pride in his academic background and in having raised his sons well. He wanted to meet a considerably younger, pleasant-looking woman.

I introduced him to a woman in her late 50s who had also devoted herself to raising her children.

His reaction was immediate. “How could you introduce someone like her to me?”

I told him, “At this stage of life, people who have built successful lives rarely judge each other primarily by academic background.”

Then I said honestly, “The women you’re hoping to meet aren’t looking for someone like you.”

I introduced several more women, but he rejected every one.

Around the same time, two other men in their 60s came to me for introductions. Looking at these three men made me think about what really makes someone desirable later in life.

Mr. B was a former executive at a public corporation. He had a respected professional license, continued to work, and owned his home.

He wanted someone considerably younger, perhaps in her late 40s or early 50s.

He certainly had strengths, but he wasn't in what I would call the “safe zone.” His future lifestyle still depended on how long he could continue working.

The most interesting story belonged to Mr. C.

He was in his mid-60s, about 5'4", balding, and a high school graduate.

When he was young, he said, he had struggled because of his appearance and education.

He eventually married, but became a divorced father raising two children.

Then his life changed.

He started a small manufacturing business producing industrial components. One of his inventions earned a patent, and the company grew rapidly. Today, it is a successful mid-sized manufacturer with several hundred employees.

After more than twenty years of living alone, he cautiously asked me, “I’ve spent so much of my life working that I almost forgot about relationships. Is it too late for me? Could someone like me still meet a good woman?”

I told him, “Of course.”

He also hoped to meet a younger woman, but wondered whether anyone like that would actually want to meet him.

The answer surprised him.

There were quite a few women who wanted to meet him.

When he was young, dating had been difficult. Now, for the first time, he was the one choosing.

That made me think about how the things we value change with age.

In your twenties, education often matters.

In your thirties, career becomes more important.

But by your sixties, what matters most is how you have lived and what you have become.

Mr. C may never have been conventionally handsome, but he had something more important: the quiet confidence and dignity of a man who had continued to grow throughout his life.

Before two people meet, education, career, and financial stability often influence whether an introduction happens.

But once they meet, those factors begin to fade.

What matters then is character, manners, emotional maturity, and the ability to understand another person.

After fifty, people look less at potential and more at the life someone is actually living.

Are you still engaged with life? Do you take care of yourself? Are you still working with purpose? And have you become someone who knows how to care for another person?

Looking back on these three men reminded me of something I have learned throughout my years in matchmaking.

A person’s greatest advantage in their sixties is not their past. It is the life they are living today.

Education, career, and wealth all matter.

But nothing is more attractive than someone who continues to grow, contribute, and live with purpose—no matter their age.
