스티븐허의 전반적인 미국입시이야기, 1편
놀랍게도 많은 학생들과 부모들이 미국 대학 입시에 대해 기본적인 이해가 부족하다. 그래서 이 기사는 전체적인 이해를 위한 단계별 연속 물 중 첫 번째 사항이다.
* 미국 대학들은 지원자들의 9학년부터 11학년 또는 11학년 2학기부터 그 전의 6학기 성적 및 특별활동 등을 필요로 한다. 만약 학생이 평균대로 9, 10, 11학년을 순서대로 밟지 않았다면 두 번째 옵션--11학년 2학기부터 그 전의 6학기--이 중요하다. 그 이유는 많은 지원 원서들 (The Common App, the University of California app, California State University App, the Coalition Application, the Apply Texas app) 이 학생들이 본인들의 성적을 직접 입력하게끔SRAR (Self Reported Academic Record, as it's sometimes called) 되어 있기 때문이다. 그러나 월반이나 유급을 했을 경우 순서대로 성적을 입력하지 못하기 때문에 온라인상으로 다음 페이지로 넘어가지 못하기 때문이다. 12학년 때 성적은 미국 대학 입시에도 중요하지만 나중에 다른 이유에서도 중요하다.
* 그리고 현재 고등학교의 성적표도 보게 되기 때문에 학생의 9학년 때부터의 모든 성적이 기재 되어 있어야 한다. 학교 교무과에 가서 비공식적 성적표를 원서 입력 또는 장학금 신청을 위해 필요하다고 요청해서 받는다. 비공식적과 공식적 성적표의 차이는 공식적인 성적표는 봉투가 붙어있고 뚜껑에 도장이나 싸인이 되어있어 성적표가 변조되지 않았다는 거를 증명할 수 있다. 하지만 내용은 비공식 성적표나 공식 성적표가 똑같다. 교무과에서 받은 성적표 (매년 학교에서 받는 선생님의 코멘트 등이 적혀있지 않은 대학교에서 받아볼 성적표) 에 하나라도 빠진 성적이 있는지 꼭 확인해야 한다. 그 어느 문제라도 지금 사전에 발견하고 해결 하는 게 무척 중요하다. 특히 해외에서 미국으로 고등학교 전학을 한다던가 1년 휴학을 한다던가 아님 기말고사를 보지 않고 전학을 하게 되면 문제를 해결 해서 성적표에 빠진 것이 없도록 하는 것이 중요하다. 특별히 기말고사를 보지 않고 전학했을 때가 정말 결정적인 문제가 될 수 있기에 원서 접수 바로 직전까지 기다리기 보단 지금 미리 해결 하는 게 좋다. 그리고 GED (general equivalency diploma--homeschooled high school diploma equivalent) 로 해결할 수 있다고 생각 하는 건 잘못된 생각이다.
US University Admissions Overview, Part 1
Many parents and students, surprisingly seem to have very little basic understanding of US university admissions, so this article is the first in a series of a broad overview and a step-by-step approach starting from the first considerations.
* US universities consider an applicant's grades and extracurricular activities starting from the 9th grade to the 11th, or from the 11th grade 2nd semester and counting backwards six semesters. Many applications (The Common App, the University of California app, California State University App, the Coalition Application, the Apply Texas app) require students to input their own grades into the application, and skipping a grade or repeating a grade will make inputting grades into this online SRAR (Self Reported Academic Record, as it's sometimes called) difficult and won't allow applicants to advance to the next online-application screen. 12th grade grades are important in US college admissions too, but in a different way and more on that later.
* It is also the current high school's transcript that is looked at, so the current high school in its transcript should have records of all of students' previous school grades recorded into its own transcript, again from the 9th grade onwards. Go to the "registrar's office" and ask the registrar for an unofficial transcript. The difference between an "unofficial transcript" and an "official transcript" is only that the unofficial transcript isn't sealed. Make sure that the transcript you have from the registrar's office has every grade filled in and isn't missing any grades. This is an especially critical issue for students transferring from overseas high schools to US schools--and students in the process taking a semester off or leaving the old high school without taking the final examinations. This last is an especially critical problem and one that needs to be addressed now, rather than right before applying to universities.
