벨뷰는 2008년 CNN머니 선정 워싱턴주에서 가장 사업을 시작하기 좋은 도시 1위로 선정, 2010년 미국에서 가장살기 좋은 도시 4위에 오르는 영예를 얻었다. 시애틀로부터는
레이크 워싱턴(워싱턴호) 건너편에 위치한 벨뷰는 2008년 이전 급성장을 이루어왔다. 현재 워싱턴주에서 두번째로 큰 도심부이며, 일인당 소득이 워싱턴주 522개 커뮤니티중 6번째로 부유한 도시이다. 2010년 인구통계자료에 의하면 12만2천363명의 인구가 살고 있다.
역사와 성장
프랑스어로 ‘아름다운 경치 (beautiful view)’라는 의미를 가진 벨뷰는 1869년에 윌리엄 메이든바우어 (William
Meydenbauer)에 의해 설립되었으며 1953년에 공식적으로 시로서 모습을 갖추었다. 1940년 현재의 I-90를
연결하는 레이크 워싱턴 부교의 개통이전의 벨뷰모습은 조그마한 시골지역이었다고 한다. 1963년에 레이크 워싱턴에서 두번째의
다리인 에버그린 포인트 부교 (520)가 개통되자 벨뷰는 더욱 빠르게 성장하는 동력을 갖추게 되었다.
벨뷰의 성장 가운데에, 이지역 쇼핑의 중심이 된 벨뷰 스퀘어 (Bellevue Square)가 있는데, 1946년에 오픈한 벨뷰
스퀘어는 1980년대에 대대적인 확장을 했으며, 가장 최근엔 Bellevue Way쪽으로 확장한 “The Lodge” 와 벨뷰
스퀘어에서 Bellevue Way 바로 건너편으로 생긴 링컨타워(Lincoln Tower 링컨 스퀘어안의 고급호텔과
아파트건물) 가 벨뷰를 킹카운티 동부지역의 쇼핑과 먹거리 중심지로 확고히 하게 하였다.
2000년대 들어서 몇해동안 경기침체로 인해 몇몇 공사가 중단되었지만, 이후 다시 개발붐을 타고 있다. 거주용 고가건물인
Ashwood Commons 의 첫단계 건설이 최근에 완결되었고, 링컨 스퀘어는 상가를 위한 두번째 타워가 건설중이다.
세이프웨이 (Safeway)가게와 고급아파트 (Avalon Meydenbauer)를 위한 복합 용도의 프라젝트와 두개의 타워를
가질 고급 콘도미니엄 프락젝트(Bellevue Towers)등이 이미 공사가 시작되었다. 링컨 스퀘어와 비슷한 또다른 개발
프라젝트가 현재의 세이프웨이상가 위치에 계획되어 있다. 워싱턴 스퀘어라고 불리는 이 개발프라젝트는 9개의 블락(block)지역에
걸치며, 최종적으로 22층 이상의 6개 타워를 포함할 거라고 한다.
예정되어 있는 다른 프라젝트들: Meydenbauer Place, 새로운 아트센터, 3개이상의 거주용 용도의 건물 타워 , 텍타워(Tech Tower) 를 교체할 타워333 (Tower 333)

벨뷰는 서쪽으로 아주 부유한 교외지역인 머다이나 (Medina), 클리이드 힐 (Clyde Hill), 헌스포인트 (Hunts Point), 애로우포인트 (Yarrow Point)등과 경계를 이루고 있다.

시 정부와 정치
벨뷰는 선출직으로 4년임기를 가지는 7명의 시의원과 함께 초당적인 매니저를 두고 있다. 시의회는 7명의 시의원들로부터 시장을
선출하는데 시장은 의장으로 역할을 하지만 비토권은 주어지지 않는다. 시장의 역할은 벨뷰시에서는 주로 행사에 관련된 의례적인
것이며, 시운영과 관련된 업무는 시의 매니저가 담당한다.
Culture
1947년 이래로 7월 말경에 매년 Bellevue Arts & Crafts Fair가 열린다. 벨뷰 아트 뮤지엄(The
Bellevue Arts Museum)은 1975년에 처음 오픈하였고, 1983에 벨뷰스퀘어로 장소를 옮긴다음, 2001년 스티븐
홀(Steven Holl) 에 의해 디자인된 독립된 빌딩을 갖게 되었지만, 너무 추상적인 작품에만 치중한 나머지 대중의 외면을
초래해 재정적인 어려움에 처하여 2003년 대중에게 폐쇄되었다. 오랜 펀드레이징 캠페인을 하고나서야, 공예를 포함한 보다
실용적인 아트소개와 지역 예술인들의 참여를 약속하며 뮤지엄은 2005년 6월 18일 다시 오픈했다. 여름에는 딸기 축제와 24시간 릴레이가 열린다.
인형박물관을 관람하고 싶으면, Rosalie Whyel Museum of Doll Art
( http://www.dollart.com/contact_control.htm )를 추천한다. 3천개 이상의 인형들이 빅토리안 스타일의 건물에 있는 두층에 걸쳐 전시되어 있으며 구매할 수도 있다.
어린이를 위한 뮤지엄 (KidsQuest Children’s Museum)이 2005년 12월에 팩토리아몰 (Factoria
Mall) 에 오픈하였다. 어린 유아에서 부터 12살의 연령까지 10000스퀘어 피트의 면적에 이르는 칠드런뮤지엄에서 갖은
교육적인 활동을 즐길 수 있다.
2010년 통계에 의하면 62.6%가 백인이고 27.6%가
아시안이다. 중국, 인도, 러시아, 멕시코로 부터 온 외국인들이 많이 거주한다. 인도인과 중국인들은 2000년이래, 두배로 수가
증가하였다.
교육
시티 유니버시티 (City University)와 벨뷰 커뮤니티 칼리지 (Bellevue Community College)가
있으며, 벨뷰 학군 (벨뷰 스쿨 디스트릭트)를 갖고 있다. 벨뷰 하이스쿨 (Bellevue High School), 뉴포트
하이스쿨 (Newport High School), 인터레이크 하이스쿨 (Interlake High School), 사마미쉬
하이스쿨 (Sammamish High School)등 4개의 주요 공립 고등학교가 있다. 벨뷰는 2010년 뉴스위크
선정 미국에서 최상의 학교들 리스팅 (AP 테스트를 본 숫자를 졸업반 학생수로 나눈 수치에 의거함) 에 다섯곳의 학교가 선정되었다.
