Stanford has come a long way from the stock farm that Leland and Jane Stanford decided to turn into a small university in 1891. While the couple was blueprinting the picture of university in Palo Alto, they visited Cornell, Yale, Harvard and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

They talked with President Eliot of Harvard about three ideas: a university at Palo Alto, a large institution in San Francisco combining a lecture hall and a museum, and a technical school. Asked which of these seemed most desirable, Eliot answered, a university. Mrs. Stanford inquired how much the endowment should be, in addition to land and buildings, and he replied, not less than $5 million. A silence followed. Finally, Mr. Stanford said with a smile, "Well, Jane, we could manage that, couldn't we?" and a grave Mrs. Stanford nodded her assent.

Just over 100 years later, the university continues to grow and change to make the most of its faculty and student on its huge campus of 8,180 acres locate in the heart os Palo Alto and Silicon Valley, an hour drive away from San Francisco.

Far removed from the cold winters a deep-rooted tradition of the Ivy League, Stanford, just over 100 years old, is a young institution still creating its offerings for its 6,500 undergraduate students. In 1997 a set of eighty new seminars was offered for the first time to the incoming freshman class. A three-year-old program called “Sophomore College” lets sophomore apply to take one of a set of intensive small seminars with a faculty member for a few weeks before regular classess start in the fall. The academic programs constantly changing and being modified, and student input plays a role in what is kept and what is discarded.

As at any other top university, you’ll find quite a few people stumbling out of the library at midnight, only to back at the same desk the next day after classess end. The courses are demanding, and there a few students who don’t spend at least a few sleepless nights in the computer centers or in the twenty-four-hour study room attached to Meyer Library. But at Standford, the perpetually shining shun makes it hard to study indoors and stress over school all the time. The change in Standford’s reputation and academic fortunes was almost as rapid. Always known as a leader in both the sciences and the liberal arts, the school seems on the verge of becoming, “Stanford Tech.”

Stanford's current community of scholars includes: • 17 Nobel laureates • 4 Pulitzer Prize winners • 23 MacArthur Fellows • 21 recipients of the National Medal of Science • 4 National Medal of Technology recipients • 224 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences • 133 members of the National Academy of Sciences • 82 National Academy of Engineering members • 25 members of the National Academy of Education

  • Stephen Breyer

  • John Elway                      NFL

  • Robert Hass                     시인

  • Anthony Kennedy

  • Ted Koppel                       ABC Nightline 앵커

  • Sandra Day O’Connor

  • William H. Rehnquist

1. Freshman Class Profile (신입생 내력)

   18,628 applied (지원) 2,343 admitted(입학허가), 1,640 enrolled (최종등록).

Public high school 71.6%, prive high school 28%.

2. Admission Requirements (입학요건):

Students who derive pleasure from learning for its own sake thrive at Stanford. We look for distinctive students who exhibit energy, curiosity and a love of learning in their classes and lives.

Academic excellence is the primary criterion for admission, and the most important credential is the transcript. We seek outstanding students who have selected a rigorous academic program and achieved distinction in a range of courses. We also take into consideration personal qualities—we want to know how students have taken advantage of available resources and their promise for contributing to the campus community and the world beyond Stanford. In some cases, exceptional ability in a particular area may be considered if an applicant is otherwise highly qualified.

Stanford recommends that prospective students take a minimum of four years of English, four years of mathematics, three years of laboratory science, three years of the same foreign language and three years of history or social studies. Each year, many more highly qualified students apply than the university has places for in the freshman class of 1,600 and the transfer group of about 80.

Stanford is committed to a need-blind admission policy for U.S. citizens and permanent residents—admitting qualified students without regard to their ability to pay—and to providing a comprehensive financial aid program for all admitted students who have computed need as determined by the university and who meet other requisite conditions for financial aid. Financial aid was provided to about 74 percent of undergraduate students from a variety of internal and external sources in 2002–2003.

The SAT I or ACT is required; the SAT I is preferred. The University recommends that applicants have strong preparation in high school English, math, a foreign language, science, and social studies. SAT II Subject tests are strongly recommended. AP credits are accepted. Important factors in the admission decision are advanced placement or honor courses, personality/intangible qualities, and recommendations by school offcials.

Preparing for Stanford — Grade 11  (스텐포드대학 입학사정의원회에서 11학년생들에게 주는 조언)

If you plan on applying to college during the 12th grade, then 11th grade may be the most important year to prepare. As the last full year of school that colleges can evaluate before they make a decision on your application, what you do in class and out of class during 11th grade is crucial. This year is also when you should begin preparing for college applications by researching colleges and signing up to take standardized tests for the first time. Here are some reminders of things to do during your junior year, no matter which colleges you are considering.

Meet with your counselor early and often.

It is very important this year to talk regularly and openly with your counselor about your college hopes and plans. It may be helpful to have conversations about what colleges to begin exploring, and what you need to do during this year to maximize your applications. Work with your counselor to build a course schedule that challenges you at all times and that satisfies the requirements for graduation.

Learn about the admission process from friends who are applying.

If you have friends, neighbors, or relatives who are applying to colleges this year, use their experiences to see what the process is actually like. Note when the busiest times of the year are for them, ask if there is anything they would do differently if they could do it all over again, and talk to them about what they like about the schools to which they are applying. This friendly advice will help you tremendously when it is your time to apply.

Work hard and discover what subjects most excite you.

No college will admit you simply because you appear to be the best at everything. College admission officers want to see your passions. Of course they will expect that you earn the best grades that you can. But more important, they will want to see that you are earning those grades because of your interest in learning and quest for knowledge, not just because you want to be the best in your class. If you do not have the highest grades in your class, do not give up…continue to try your hardest, challenge yourself, and find real enjoyment in the questions and topics that you are studying.

Take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude (PSAT).

The PSAT is basically a practice for the SAT. Scoring well on the PSAT can be an indication to colleges and universities that you are ready for the demands of college work; many colleges and universities will send you information about their schools if they are impressed with your scores. You can also enter scholarship competitions if you score highly on the PSAT, such as National Merit, National Achievement, and National Hispanic Scholarships.

Register early for the SAT or ACT.

The PSAT is not the only way to improve your SAT scores. You can also take the actual test in May or June. Perhaps you will be happy with your scores after taking it in the spring; in that case you will be done with them. If not, you will be even more prepared to take the tests again in the fall of your senior year. Ask your counselor if there are any books or online tutorials at your school to help you prepare for these tests, one or both of which will be required by most of the colleges to which you will apply.

Do not forget the SAT Subject Tests.

The SAT Subject Tests measure what you have learned in specific courses. Because of this, it is a good idea to take these tests soon after you complete a course. If you are taking American History or Chemistry during junior year, for example, it might make sense to sign up for the June SAT Subject Tests in American History or Chemistry while the material is still fresh in your mind. Many colleges will require three SAT Subject Tests – one in math and two in subjects you choose. You will be able to take three SAT Subject Tests on the same test date, but you cannot take the SAT Reasoning Test and any SAT Subject Tests on the same day.

Deepen your commitment in extracurricular activities.

During 11th grade, seek out ways to become more involved in the clubs and activities that most excite you. Assume leadership roles on specific projects or run for one of the leadership offices in the organization. Talk to your coaches or advisors about your exciting ideas for the club or team and ask if there are any other ways that you can develop your talents and interests. Remember that colleges will be less interested in what a specific club is and more interested in your specific involvement with it – colleges will want to see that you are providing creative energy and exciting leadership to the activities you most enjoy.

Discuss with your favorite teachers the possibility of them writing recommendations for you.

Most colleges will require two letters of recommendation from teachers who know you well. These teachers should have taught you in the core academic subjects of English, math, foreign language, social studies, and science. If you have a particularly strong relationship with a teacher from the 11th grade, be sure you talk to them before the summer and ask if they will be able to write a recommendation for you the next year. By asking early, they will be able to think about your recommendation over the summer. When you return for 12th grade, seek out these teachers once again and ask them if they are still available to write a letter on your behalf.

Pre-register for challenging 12th grade courses.

If your school requires that you pre-register during the spring of your 11th grade for your 12th grade classes, make sure that you seek out the courses that will challenge you and excite you the most. If you can fit Honors or Advanced Placement courses into your schedule, remember to sign up for them early. Also remember that colleges will want to see a full and demanding load throughout the entire year; do not think that once you submit your applications in December or January you no longer need college-prep courses. At all times, choose from among the most rigorous courses you can in English, math, foreign language, social studies, and science while remembering to satisfy all requirements for graduation.

Begin exploring the colleges that interest you.

You should not wait until the last moment to decide the colleges to which you might want to apply. When you hear of a new college that sounds like a good fit, research it by looking in guidebooks or at the college’s website. If possible, visit colleges during the summer to hear about the unique programs at that school and to learn about the college admission process there.
