Princeton University is a vibrant community of scholarship and learning that stands in the nation's service and in the service of all nations. Chartered in 1746, and known as the College of New Jersey until 1896, it was British North America's fourth college.



Fully coeducational since 1969, Princeton in the 2004-2005 academic year enrolled 6,692 students -- 4,695 undergraduates and 1,997 graduate students -- with a ratio of full-time students to faculty members of 5.6 to 1. The University, which has 5,500 benefits-eligible faculty and staff, is Mercer County's largest private employer and plays a major role in the educational, cultural and economic life of the region.



Today, Princeton's main campus in Princeton Borough and Princeton Township consists of more than 8 million square feet of space in 160 buildings on 500 acres. It plays a major role in the educational, cultural, and economic life in the area by bringing more than 500,000 visitors and $1.9 billion in economic activity to the region



Princeton University occupies a unique position in American higher education. The lovely town of Princeton, equidistant from New York City and Philadelphia, is easy on the eyes if hard on the wallet. The campus itself is among the most beautiful in the country, with stone Gothic buildings, Georgian brick structures, and a smattering of modernist creations scattered among hardwood trees and ubiquitous ivy. Along with Dartmouth College, Princton is an undergraduate’s Ivy League school, as students have access to many full professors from their first days on campus.



President Shirley M. Tilghman noted in her 2003 Commencement address: “The specific components of a Princeton education have evolved over time, but our central aim has remained the same: to instill in each graduate those qualities of mind and character necessary for good citizenship and wise leadership. They include a broad intellectual curiosity that embraces open-mindedness coupled with critical thinking; respect for our moral and cultural inheritance coupled with a capacity for innovation and change; an appreciation of the shared destiny and common humanity of all peoples; and core principles of responsibility, integrity and courage.”



Princeton is leading the way in doing away the burden of debt from student loans that many undergraduates carry with them into the business world. The school has announced a new program that will replace student loans with scholarships. According to school’s Web site, “Princeton is the first of its peer institutions – and, except for the service academies, possibly the first American university – to announce that aid recipients will not be required to borrow to pay for college.” This is marvelous news for undergraduates not only at Princeton, but across the nation. As a trend-setter, Princeton’s move will most likely be followed by other institutions. For a top-flight student with the necessary credentials and luck to be admitted, it provides a valuable degree along with plenty of intellectual and moral challenges.



생동감이 넘치는 학문의 요람이자 세계적인 영재들과 석학들의 집결체이며 인류의 공헌에 적극 이바지하려는 이념을 가진 프린스턴 대학교는, 영국 식민지 통치하에 있던 당시 북미주에서는 1746년 4번째 오랜 역사로 The College of New Jersey 라는 이름으로 운영되다가,  1896년에 와서야 오늘의 프린스턴 대학교로 이름이 바뀌게 되었다.



1969년 부터는 전면적으로 남녀공학을 실시하여 여학생들을 받아 들이기 시작했으며 2004-2005학년도에는 학부 4,695명, 대학원 1,997명을 포함해서 전교생이 6,692명이며, 학생과 교수진의 비율은 5.6대 1로 학생 개개인이 지적 성장에 최대의 만전을 기하고있는 명문중의 명문이라 할 수있다. 5,500명의 교수진과 연구원을 가진 프린스턴 대학은 대학이 소재한 뉴져지주 머서카운티에서는 가장 많은 인적 자원을 보유한 기관이자 매년 50만명이상이 각종 회의, 세미나, 연구활동을 위해 대학을 방문하고 있으며, 지역사회에 매년 19억불의 경제부양을 창출시키고 있다.



프린스턴시에서 뉴욕시나 필라델피아 까지는 각각 1시간이 소요되며, 세계적인 명성을 지닌 교수진과 강의들을 제공하는 프린스턴 대학교는 아이비리그 8개 대학들중에서 다트머스 대학 (Dartmouth College)과 함께 대학원 중심이 아닌 학부 중심의 대학이므로 학부의 학생들이 교수들과의 긴밀한 교류가 가능하다. 대학이 자랑하는 가장 큰 규모의 Firestone 도서관은 책꽂이 선반의 길이가 70마일이 되고, 2,200 명이 동시에 앉아 공부할 수 있는 좌석 규모를 가지고 있다.



모두가 우수한 재학생들 중에서 특히 저소득층의 학생들을 재학중 학비 융자등으로 인한 채무를 짊어지고 사회에 진출시킬 수 없다는 점을 간파한 프린스턴 대학교는 최근들어서는 학비보조나 융자가 필요한 저소득층의 자녀들에게는 절대로 학비 융자나 채무지는 법이 없이 학비 전액을 대학과 대학 동문들의 출자로 무상지원 장학금으로 바꾸어 줌으로서 “프린스턴 대학은 미국 대학 역사상 최초로 저소득층자녀 재학생들을 무상으로 교육시켜주는 일대 변혁을 이루었고” 가히 전세계 대학들에게 경종을 울리는 모델케이스가 되고 있다.



프린스턴 교육의 전통적인 특징(the hallmark of a Princeton education)은 모든 신입생들은 대학이 제공하는 65개의 세미나 프로그램에서 참여해야하는 의무가 있다. 이 세미나에는 소규모의 학생들과 교수가 함께 주제를 정해놓고 토론하며 학문적 접근을 이루어 가는 방식을 택하고 있다.



또한 1905년 당시 우드로윌슨 (Woodrow Wilson) 총장에 의해 시작된 상급학년 스터디그룹인 프리셉토리얼 (Preceptorial)은 담당교수의 지도감독하에 그주의 강의 내용과 할당된 독서물에 대한 토론 발표회가 있으며, 어느 전공을 택하든 3학년때에는 독자적으로 자기 전공에 관한 연구(independent work)를 해야하며 4학년때에는 졸업필수로 논문을 제출해야 하는데 이런 학문적인 전통은 학생들이 3-4학년 동안 자기전공에 관한 연구와 졸업 논문을 준비하고 작성하는 과정에서 교수들과 긴밀한 학문적 교류를 할 수 있는 최대의 장점이 있다.



대부분의 프린스턴 졸업생들은 그들의 4년을 회고하면서 무한한 가능성을 제시해준 대학의 뛰어난 교육에 감사하고 있다. 현재 생존하는 프린스턴 동문은 7만명에 이르고 있는데 그들중 10% 이상이 모교 발전을 위해 직접 자원봉사를 하며, 모교 졸업생들의 취업알선에도 최선을 다해 협조하고 있고, 65%의 동문들이 모교에 재정지원을 하고 있다. 학교의 재산 보유고가 1996년에는 40억 달러였는데 2001년 현재 8조 달러에 이르고 있기에 상당히 많은 수의 학부와 대학원 재학생들이 장학금혜택을 많이 누리고 있다.

2. Admission Requirements (입학요건):  



   The SAT I is required. In addition, the ACT is accepted. SAT II: Subject tests are also required. Recommended college preparatory courses include 4 years each of English, math, and a foreign languages; 2 years of each lab science and history, and some study of art, music. An essay is required and interview is recommended. Fine arts majors should submit an audition tape or portfolio. AP credits are accepted.



    SAT I 은 필수이며 ACT 성적으로도 대치한다. SAT II 과목시험 성적도 요구된다. 고교재학시 이수해야 하는 학과목으로는 영어, 수학, 외국어는 4년, 과학, 역사는 2년, 선택과목으로 음악과 예술을 권장한다. 에세이와 인터뷰가 요망되며, 예술 전공 지원자들은 작품집을 제출해야 한다.







3. Procedure (지원절차)



Freshmen are admitted in the fall. Entrance exams should be taken by January of the senior year. Early decision applications should be filded by November 1; regular applications, by January 1 for fall entry, along with $60 fee. Notification of early decision is sent December; regular decision, April 1.  Financial aid: FAFSA, institutional form required. Closing date 2/1



신입생 입학은 가을학기만 실시. SAT 나 ACT 같은 입학표준시험은 12학년 1월까지 응시한 성적을 인정한다. 조기지원 원서마감은 11월 1일, 정규지원은 1월 1일 이며 $60의 신청비를 내야 한다. 조기지원 입학 결정통보는 12월 중에, 정규 지원은 4월초에 이루어진다.





4. Special Academic Option (특별학사과정)



Princeton offers independent study, cooperative education,  cross registration, preceptorials, accelerated degree programs, a program in teacher preparation, student-proposed courses and majors field study, study abroad, seminars, Army, Air Force ROTC and internships. Project in junior year and senior thesis required for graduation.  



특별학사과정으로 대학 3,4학년 동안 전공분야에서 독자적으로 연구활동하는 프로그램, 산학훈련-학교 교육과 기업실무의 연계프로그램, 타대학동시등록 가능, 상급학년 스터디 그룹, 조기졸업, 교사자격증과정, 개인에 맞는 새로운 전공창출프로그램, 실습/답사, 해외연수, 세미나, ROTC (육군,공군), 인턴쉽 들이 있으며 3,4학년 부터는 졸업논문을 준비해야 한다. 우드로윌슨 행정연수원 (Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs)은 학부과정에서 매년 8명을 특별선정하여 세계적인 수준의 행정관련분야 전문인을 양성하고 있다. 이곳 졸업생들은 현제 국내외 법률, 행정분야의 대표적인 전문가로 활약하고 있다.







5. Programs of Study (전공)



Princeton confers A.B and B.S.E degrees. Master’s and doctoral degrees are also awarded.   (학사, 석사, 박사과정이 있다)



Bachelor;s degrees are awarded in BIOLOGICAL SCIENCE (biology/biological science), COMMUNICATIONS AND THE ARTS (classics, comparative literature, English, Germanic languages and literature, music, romance languages and literature, and Slavic languages), COMPUTER AND PHYSICAL SCIENCE (astrophysics, chemistry, computer science, geology, mathematics, and physics), ENGINEERING AND ENVIRONMENTAL DESIGN (aeronautical engineering, architectural engineering, architecture, chemical engineering), SOCIAL SCIENCE (anthropology, archeology, East Asian studies, economics, history, international relations, Near Eastern studies, philosophy, political science/government, psychology, religion, and sociology)

    



6. Housing (기숙사)



4,400 students can be accommodated in college housing which includes coed dorms, on-campus apartments, and married student housing. Freshmen and sophomores are assigned to 1 of 5 residential colleges; most juniors and seniors live in upper-class dorms. On campus housing is guaranteed for all 4 years; 98% of students live on campus; of those, 100% remain on campus weekends. Upperclassmen may keep cars in the campus.





4,400 명의 재학생들이 대학 기숙사에 수용될 수 있으며, 기혼자가정을 위한 시설도 있다. 1-2학년생들은 5개로 나누어져 있는 기숙사 건물에 거주하며 3 - 4학년들은 강의실과 연계되어 있는 기숙사시설에 거주하게 되며 3-4학년들만 캠퍼스 내에서 승용차를 소유할 수 있다; 98%의 재학생들은 기숙사에서 생활하고 있으며 주말에는 거의 전원이 캠퍼스를 만끽하며 다양한 활동에 참여하고 있다.
